Studio Job - The American Job

Studio Job was founded in 1998 by Job Smeets in the renaissance spirit, combining traditional and modern techniques to produce once-in-a-lifetime objects. At once highly specific and yet entirely universal, personally expressive and yet experimental, Studio Job has crafted a body of work that draws upon classical, popular and contemporary design and highly visual and sculptural art.

The American Job

August/September 2019, USA

In preparation for a new body of work, Studio Job’s Job Smeets created The American Job concept. Instead of retreating into a familiar studio surroundings Job decided to create a totally unfamiliar environment, an innovate approach to the creative process. Through journeying across slowly America by car, We aim to encounter the true low and high cultures of the USA beyond the influential propaganda fed by contemporary media.

The first step of the project was to establish the perfect vehicle for the tour. Job felt that a classical American road trip required a classic American car from the golden age of Detroit motoring created the most authentic experience. By then customizing the vehicle with Studio Job graphics we created a disarming talking point that intrigues people from all different parts of American society, and allows for real engagement.

Although not eliminating typical USA kitsch experiences, we designed the 10,000 mile route to avoid stereotypical tourist traps, concentrating on discovering the true layers of American culture.

The American Job journey is being extensively filmed and photographed, with the idea this material can form the base of a new body of work, documentary and book.
